Research Question:
How is paramedic independent prescribing being implemented into emergency and urgent care and what is required to maximise its potential for patients and the wider NHS?
A mixed methods exploratory sequential design will be used. This will involve semi structured interviews with key stakeholders, case study research within emergency and urgent care settings and an online questionnaire survey.
Research Objectives:
1) To evaluate the scope and scale of PISP, including the range and frequency of medications prescribed and conditions treated.
2) To investigate the frequency, safety and appropriateness of simultaneous prescribing and dispensing for administration or supply by advanced paramedics (APs).
3) To investigate key stakeholders’ views of the benefits and limitations of PISP. This will include views on the required level of experience and education, organisational readiness and controlled drug restrictions.
4) To ascertain if and how PISP has changed AP practice, confidence and autonomy.
5) To investigate whether APs are able to access support for their prescribing decisions and how pressure to prescribe is managed.
